Set the scene.
The medieval chapel of Santa Marija ta’ Bir Miftuħ stands in Gudja. Inside it survive fragments of a Last Judgement fresco, evidence of an artistic world much older than Malta’s grand Baroque churches.
Here’s the twist.
Keeping such paintings safe depends partly on their surroundings. Temperature and humidity changes can affect fragile materials. Conservation therefore involves monitoring a room, not only repairing a painted surface.
Why it still matters.
Din l-Art Ħelwa introduced low-energy LED lighting here as a conservation and energy-saving project. An old chapel and modern technology can work together when the aim is to keep delicate evidence available for the future.
