OKAY, HERE’S THE STORY

Set the scene.

St Joseph’s chapel was built in 1625 on the site of an earlier chapel dedicated to St Nicholas. Look for its simple round window and arched ceiling.

Here’s the twist.

The altar image shows the flight into Egypt. The original painting, attributed to Filippo Paladino, is kept in the Cathedral Museum.

Why it still matters.

A copy made in 1980 takes its place in the chapel. Ask why museums sometimes hold originals while copies remain at the historic site: context and conservation can require different solutions.
