Set the scene.
Floriana became a vice-parish in 1776. At that point the church of St Publius was still under construction.
Here’s the twist.
Independent parish status followed on 5 March 1844. The church and its community therefore developed across the change from the Knights’ rule to British government.
Why it still matters.
Keep the two milestones separate: work on a building and recognition of a parish describe different things. This small distinction helps decode dates on many Maltese churches.
