Set the scene.
Many fishermen working from Xlendi traditionally lived in Fontana. In the late nineteenth century they began gathering money for a church in their village.
Here’s the twist.
The foundation stone of the Sacred Heart church was laid on 29 January 1892. Its consecration took place on the same calendar date thirteen years later.
Why it still matters.
Fontana became a parish in 1911. Think of the building as a community project: its history includes the people collecting funds, not just the ceremony when the work was finished.
