Set the scene.
Work on the present Siġġiewi church began in 1675 to a design by Lorenzo Gafà. It was completed thirteen years later.
Here’s the twist.
The church is dedicated to St Nicholas of Bari. In 1862 it was enlarged to plans by Dr Nikol Zammit.
Why it still matters.
Try comparing the two phases: the first belongs to the Knights’ period and the second to British Malta. A church can preserve the work of more than one designer without losing its identity.
