OKAY, HERE’S THE STORY

Set the scene.

Charles François de Mondion designed the Banca Giuratale, also known as the Municipal Palace. The eighteenth-century building has two storeys.

Here’s the twist.

It became a repository of the National Archives, housing records from Malta’s courts and tribunals. These include documents from the period of the Order.

Why it still matters.

Commercial disputes and court cases can reveal work, money and relationships. A grand municipal building can therefore help uncover the lives of people far beyond its walls.
