Architect Stefano Ittar designed the National Library building to house the Order’s collections. Construction was completed in 1796.

Its public inauguration came in 1812, under British commissioner Hildebrand Oakes. Jean-Louis Guérin de Tencin’s large book collection had helped establish the library earlier.
