OKAY, HERE’S THE STORY

Set the scene.

The hospital at Santo Spirito was functioning by at least the fourteenth century. Its surviving Rabat building therefore belongs to a long history of care.

Here’s the twist.

Extensive restoration took place during the 1980s. Records were moved from Valletta’s Palace archives, with that transfer completed in July 1989.

Why it still matters.

The building officially opened as the National Archives headquarters in May 1994. Preserving its own walls now goes together with preserving evidence about many other places.
