OKAY, HERE’S THE STORY

Set the scene.

Born in Mosta in 1932, Bonnici studied art in Malta and continued ceramics training in Stoke-on-Trent and Rome. His work included sculpture, ceramics, medals and stamps.

Here’s the twist.

He designed seven coins for the Central Bank of Malta. Five commemorative two-euro coins issued between 2011 and 2015 traced milestones in Malta’s constitutional history.

Why it still matters.

A coin gives an artist very little space for a big story. Examine its symbols and lettering: public art can circulate through ordinary hands.
