OKAY, HERE’S THE STORY

Set the scene.

Girolamo Cassar, also known as Ġlormu Cassar, was a Maltese architect and military engineer. His work belongs to the great building effort that shaped Valletta in the sixteenth century.

Here’s the twist.

Among the city’s major buildings associated with him is the Order’s conventual church, now St John’s Co-Cathedral. Architecture helped the new capital accommodate worship, administration and the Order’s different communities.

Why it still matters.

A city is never the work of one person alone. Cassar’s story is a way into the teams of designers, skilled masons and labourers whose knowledge made ambitious projects possible. Try matching a familiar landmark with the people behind it.
