Set the scene.
Ropa was born in Xagħra and emigrated to Algeria as a small child. He became a teacher and later lived in France.
Here’s the twist.
During the 1930s he edited Melita, publishing Maltese poetry in French translation alongside literary studies. His own writing included French-language novels.
Why it still matters.
His Le Chant de la Noria was translated into Maltese as L-Għanja tas-Sienja. Literature travelled both ways: Maltese poems went out, and a migrant’s French novel came back.
