OKAY, HERE’S THE STORY

Set the scene.

In 1867, sixteen-year-old Nuzzo took responsibility for her aunt Rosina’s private school. Rosina was losing her sight; her niece already showed a talent for working with children.

Here’s the twist.

Education was not compulsory, and many families could not afford schooling. Nuzzo was especially concerned about children facing poverty and hardship.

Why it still matters.

In 1903 she founded the Daughters of the Sacred Heart. Her cousin Enrico supported the educational project with property: a family connection helped turn an idea into a community.
