Pietru Caxaro’s Cantilena dates to the fifteenth century. Its surviving copy was recorded by Brandano Caxaro, preserving an unusually early passage of Maltese.

Here’s the twist.

Mikiel Fsadni and Godfrey Wettinger rediscovered it in 1966. They studied the handwriting, language and family records before publishing their findings in 1968.

Why it still matters.

A discovery needs verification. The excitement came with careful checking: who copied it, who composed it, and how old was the writing?
