OKAY, HERE’S THE STORY

Set the scene.

The Valletta Auberge de France housed knights of the French langue, one of the Order’s language-based groups. It was one of the residences around which the Knights organised communal life.

Here’s the twist.

Bombing in 1942 destroyed it. Its site later accommodated the General Workers’ Union headquarters, giving the ground a very different public role.

Why it still matters.

Do not confuse this lost Valletta building with the surviving Auberge de France in Birgu. The same institutional name can belong to different places and different chapters.
