The original landward gate was completed in 1569. A replacement followed in 1633, and another under British administration in 1853.
Here’s the twist.
The twentieth-century gateway, completed in 1965, changed the entrance again. It was demolished in 2011 during the project that reshaped the present approach.
Why it still matters.
Compare old photographs rather than expecting one timeless gate. The city’s boundary stayed important while the form used to cross it changed with different architectural ambitions.
