Set the scene.
The Duncan-class battleship HMS Russell was launched in 1901. In April 1916, it headed towards Malta for supplies and minor dockyard repairs.
Here’s the twist.
On 27 April it struck a mine laid outside the harbour approach by the German submarine U-73. The ship sank and now rests upside down.
Why it still matters.
The wreck is also a war grave. Read the machinery and the loss together: a ship’s technical history cannot be separated from the people who served aboard.
