Set the scene.
Long before Malta’s towns, elephants, hippopotami and deer lived on the islands. Their bones survive in the deposits at Għar Dalam. This is evidence of an ancient environment, not a tale about escaped zoo animals.
Here’s the twist.
Island life can change animal size across generations. Heritage Malta describes the “Island Rule”: some large herbivores became smaller, while some small animals became larger in isolated island conditions.
Why it still matters.
The cave also contains later evidence of Neolithic people. Keep the layers separate: the human story and the much older animal story are different chapters stored in the same place.
