OKAY, HERE’S THE STORY

Set the scene.

On 25 January 1962 a group formed the Malta Ornithological Society to study and protect birds and their habitats. It became Malta’s oldest environmental organisation.

Here’s the twist.

An early success in 1966 stopped a proposed road through Għadira wetland. Protecting birds meant protecting somewhere for them to live and rest.

Why it still matters.

In 1992 the society joined the BirdLife International partnership and adopted the name BirdLife Malta. The familiar name arrived thirty years after the organisation began.
