Set the scene.
Pompeo de Fiore introduced printing to Malta in 1642 through private initiative. Grand Master Lascaris granted permission on 17 June.
Here’s the twist.
There was a restriction: work had to be vetted by the Inquisitor before going to press. A printing machine did not bring unrestricted publication.
Why it still matters.
Compare technology with permission. Owning a way to distribute ideas and having the freedom to use it are different things; Malta’s early press makes that distinction clear.
