Set the scene.
In April 1968, musicians from the disbanded Royal Navy Mediterranean Fleet Band formed the Manoel Theatre Orchestra. A musical ending became a new beginning.
Here’s the twist.
It served as the theatre’s resident orchestra until 1997, when it became the independent National Orchestra. The change widened its institutional identity beyond one theatre.
Why it still matters.
In 2008 it expanded into a full symphony orchestra and took the name Malta Philharmonic Orchestra. Follow the names to follow the organisation’s growth.
