Set the scene.
In 1922, Tessie Camilleri became the first woman to graduate from the University of Malta. The milestone belongs to the history of who could enter higher education and be recognised within it.
Here’s the twist.
The University also remembers other early women students, including Blanche Huber in medicine and Lucia Levanzin in midwifery. Different courses and qualifications had their own paths towards wider participation.
Why it still matters.
One first is a beginning. Ask what had to change for later students to follow: access, expectations and opportunities matter alongside individual achievement. A graduation photograph can contain a much larger social story.
