OKAY, HERE’S THE STORY

Set the scene.

Italian battleships with huge guns prompted Britain to strengthen Malta’s defences. Fort Rinella and Fort Cambridge each received a 100-ton gun.

Here’s the twist.

Rinella’s gun arrived in 1884, while construction of the battery spanned 1879–1886. Mechanical systems helped operate and load this enormous muzzle-loading weapon.

Why it still matters.

A ditch, protected entrance and defensive firing positions guarded the installation. Think of the fort as a machine’s supporting infrastructure: the gun could not do its job alone.
