OKAY, HERE’S THE STORY

Set the scene.

Inaugurated in 1992, this memorial commemorates more than 7,000 service personnel and civilians who died during Malta’s Second World War siege.

Here’s the twist.

The bell was intended to toll at noon in remembrance. In front of it lies a bronze sculpture representing the unknown soldier buried at sea.

Why it still matters.

Notice the two forms of memory: a sound that travels across the harbour and a figure that invites a close look. Both belong to the same memorial landscape.
