Set the scene.
Erected in 1614, St Thomas Tower stands on the seaward side of the Ħamrija headland at Marsaskala.
Here’s the twist.
Its purpose was to help prevent troops landing in Marsaskala Creek and St Thomas Bay. An artillery battery was added in the early eighteenth century.
Why it still matters.
Look at the coast from the defenders’ perspective. Calm-looking anchorages could offer an enemy a landing place, making geography as important as the thickness of the tower’s walls.
