Set the scene.
St Julian’s Main Street runs inland rather than following the whole waterfront. Albert Storace explains that it once provided the only street connection between Balluta and Spinola bays.
Here’s the twist.
A wider coastal road was built during Governor Grenfell’s term, 1899–1903. That later route carried Grenfell’s name before becoming Ġorġ Borg Olivier Street.
Why it still matters.
The name Main Street preserves the older route’s importance. Compare the two routes: a newer, wider road does not automatically inherit every older name.
