OKAY, HERE’S THE STORY

Set the scene.

Visit Gozo explains Xewkija through an Arabic-derived meaning: an area of thorny wasteland. The word invites a picture unlike the developed village today.

Here’s the twist.

Xewkija became Gozo’s first parish outside Rabat on 27 November 1678. Its later rotunda made a huge new landmark on the skyline.

Why it still matters.

Names need not update whenever places change. Imagine replacing every town’s name when a new building arrived: we would lose useful clues to earlier landscapes.
