OKAY, HERE’S THE STORY

Set the scene.

Mqabba became a parish in 1598. St Basil’s church initially served the parish while the community awaited a new St Mary’s church.

Here’s the twist.

The present Assumption church dates to 1699. It later suffered severe damage during the Second World War.

Why it still matters.

Repair work continued until 1947. That date is a reminder to look beyond the end of a war: rebuilding homes and community landmarks could continue long after the raids stopped.
