Set the scene.
The first stone of the present church was laid in December 1760. Its dedication is to the apostles Peter and Paul.
Here’s the twist.
The facade and aisles came later, in the early twentieth century, following designs by Francesco Saverio Sciortino. The outside does not tell just one century’s story.
Why it still matters.
Lazzaro Pisani painted scenes from the apostles’ lives on the ceiling and dome. Try reading the building in layers: original construction, later expansion and painted storytelling all belong to its history.
