Set the scene.
This Marian shrine stands between Qala and Ħondoq ir-Rummien. It dates back to 1575 and was enlarged in the early 1650s.
Here’s the twist.
In 1688 it became the parish church serving Nadur, Qala and Għajnsielem. That shared role lasted about twelve years.
Why it still matters.
It served Qala as a parish church again between 1872 and 1889. Imagine travelling here before the later village churches: parish boundaries help explain why a remote-looking chapel once mattered so much.
