OKAY, HERE’S THE STORY

Set the scene.

Work on the present church began in September 1886. It was completed and consecrated in April 1889, before the village became a separate parish in 1893.

Here’s the twist.

Its statue of St Lawrence came from the workshop of Louis Ramat in Marseilles. It arrived in Gozo in August 1895.

Why it still matters.

The statue travelled in procession from Għarb to San Lawrenz. Follow that route in your mind: religious art also tells stories about workshops, shipping and communities welcoming a new possession.
