Set the scene.
Sarria Church in Floriana was rebuilt in 1676 under Grand Master Nicolas Cotoner after the plague of 1675–76. Its dedication and paintings reflect religious responses to that crisis.
Here’s the twist.
Mattia Preti designed the circular church as well as its paintings. Din l-Art Ħelwa describes it as his only known architectural project. That makes the space itself part of the artist’s surviving work.
Why it still matters.
The seven paintings needed conservation centuries later. A historic interior is a combination of architecture, images and materials: preserving just the outside would leave much of its story untold.
