Set the scene.
Tarxien became a parish in 1592. The church dedicated to the Annunciation was built where three small churches had previously stood.
Here’s the twist.
Those earlier dedications were to St Paul, St Luke and St Nicholas. Their memory preserves a religious landscape different from today’s single large church.
Why it still matters.
Pietro Gagliardi painted the main image of the Annunciation in 1874. Imagine the changing scale: three small places of worship, then one parish building with later artworks.
