Set the scene.
The present sanctuary of Our Lady of Graces was begun in 1641 on plans by Tumas Dingli. It was completed around 1696.
Here’s the twist.
A new facade followed in 1738, designed by Ġanni Bonavia. The front you see belongs to a later chapter than the beginning of the building.
Why it still matters.
The sanctuary has long been a pilgrimage destination. Imagine approaching it on foot: the facade was part of the experience of arriving, not simply a decorative cover.
