OKAY, HERE’S THE STORY

Set the scene.

Żabbar’s people planned a monument after Grand Master Ferdinand von Hompesch granted city status in 1797. The French invasion delayed the project.

Here’s the twist.

The arch was finally built in December 1801. Because the political circumstances had changed, direct references to the former Grand Master were deliberately avoided.

Why it still matters.

Look at the single neoclassical arch and imagine what is missing. A monument can record political caution through the words and symbols it leaves out.
