Set the scene.
Work on a larger church began in 1690 after the village gained parish status. The building was consecrated in 1726.
Here’s the twist.
Its striking stone decoration came much later. Onyx, also called Gozo alabaster, was discovered in a nearby field and used to embellish the interior.
Why it still matters.
Look for the material in the altar, pulpit and baptismal font. The building’s age and its decorative appearance belong to different chapters: an old church can acquire a new interior.
