OKAY, HERE’S THE STORY

Set the scene.

HMS Urge belonged to the submarine flotilla based in Malta. Heavy bombing prompted its departure for Alexandria on 27 April 1942.

Here’s the twist.

It was never heard from again. The submarine carried 32 crew members and twelve passengers, including war correspondent Bernard Gray.

Why it still matters.

A remote sensing survey found the wreck off Valletta in 2019. Finding the vessel answered a location question after generations of uncertainty, while its status as a war grave preserves the human loss.
