Set the scene.
The German fast boat S-31 was launched in 1939. It later operated from Sicily with a flotilla targeting shipping around Malta.
Here’s the twist.
In May 1942, S-31 and other boats were sent to lay mines near Valletta’s harbour entrance as HMS Welshman approached with supplies.
Why it still matters.
S-31 struck one of its own mines and sank with loss of life. The wreck shows how the effort to block an island’s lifeline could also destroy those laying the obstacles.
