OKAY, HERE’S THE STORY

Set the scene.

On 30 June 1943, a Spitfire from an American fighter squadron was travelling from Tunisia towards Pantelleria and Gozo.

Here’s the twist.

A missing-aircraft report records its loss in the sea. The pilot remained missing. This aircraft never took part in Operation Husky, the invasion of Sicily it was intended to support.

Why it still matters.

Sonar located the wreck off Qala in April 2021. The surviving aircraft gives a physical location to a wartime absence, while the pilot’s story remains part of the loss.
