OKAY, HERE’S THE STORY

Set the scene.

SS Luciston was a collier: a cargo ship built to carry coal. Constructed in Scotland in 1910, it later carried a supply from Cardiff towards Malta.

Here’s the twist.

A German submarine torpedoed it during the approach to Valletta in the First World War. Its fragmented wreck was found off Marsaxlokk in the late 1990s.

Why it still matters.

Coal still scattered around the wreck links the vessel to its everyday purpose. Supply ships mattered even when they lacked the armour and fame of battleships.
