OKAY, HERE’S THE STORY

Set the scene.

In 1882 electric lighting appeared at Malta’s Royal Opera House during Un Ballo in Maschera. St George’s Square was illuminated that year too.

Here’s the twist.

In 1883 Edward Robertson demonstrated electric lighting for consumers at his home in Merchants Street. Invited visitors could see the technology at work.

Why it still matters.

Demonstrations came before a widespread public supply. Imagine seeing an electrically lit room for the first time: an engineering change could also be a spectacle.
