OKAY, HERE’S THE STORY

Set the scene.

Built in 1652 under Grand Master Lascaris, Dwejra Tower guarded this stretch of Gozo’s coast and nearby Fungus Rock.

Here’s the twist.

A plant growing on the rock was prized for medicinal use. Access was tightly controlled; a primitive cable-car system once helped people reach it.

Why it still matters.

The tower also served as a lookout in the Second World War. One place connects coastal defence, the history of medicine and a much later conflict.
