Set the scene.
Gozo’s capital is known as both ir-Rabat and Victoria. The name Victoria was given in 1887 in honour of Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, when the town also received city status.
Here’s the twist.
Rabat carries an older meaning: a suburb, here associated with the settlement around the Citadel. One name points towards the relationship with the fortress; the other marks a nineteenth-century commemoration.
Why it still matters.
Neither name makes the other disappear. Signs, speech and maps can preserve several historical layers at once. When two people use different names for this city, they may be referring to exactly the same destination.
