OKAY, HERE’S THE STORY

Set the scene.

The name L-Isla comes from the Italian isola, meaning island. Yet the city stands on a peninsula: land joined to the rest of Malta, with water around much of it.

Here’s the twist.

Senglea recalls Grand Master Claude de La Sengle, under whom the fortified town developed in the 1550s. A landscape name and a ruler’s name came to describe the same harbour community.

Why it still matters.

The title Città Invicta commemorates the city’s resistance in the Great Siege of 1565. Three names or titles can therefore lead to three questions: what is its shape, who helped build it, and what did its people endure?
