OKAY, HERE’S THE STORY

Set the scene.

In 1821 this Valletta palace was leased to the naval authorities as the Mediterranean Fleet commander’s official residence. That role gave it the Admiralty House name.

Here’s the twist.

It passed to Malta’s government in 1961. In 1974 the restored building became the National Museum of Fine Arts.

Why it still matters.

Its halls surround a courtyard, with a monumental free-standing staircase. Follow the staircase in your imagination: naval officers and museum visitors used the same architectural route.
