OKAY, HERE’S THE STORY

Set the scene.

The Main Guard stands opposite the Grand Master’s Palace. It became guard quarters in 1604 and entered British use in 1814.

Here’s the twist.

An upstairs room became an Officers’ Mess, where soldiers could eat and rest between duties. Painting on its walls became a pastime.

Why it still matters.

More than 300 pictures accumulated between 1814 and 1972. Memories, humour and events survive here in painted layers, rather than only in written reports.
