OKAY, HERE’S THE STORY

Set the scene.

Under Valletta’s Upper Barrakka area, the Lascaris War Rooms housed a secret military headquarters. Rooms, tunnels, communications and ventilation made an underground working system.

Here’s the twist.

Information from radar was filtered and passed to operations teams. Different rooms coordinated different services. Picture a network of people turning incoming reports into decisions, long before today’s digital dashboards.

Why it still matters.

In July 1943, the rooms served as an advance Allied headquarters for Operation Husky, the invasion of Sicily. Their later Cold War role shows how an underground complex could be adapted when the strategic situation changed.
