OKAY, HERE’S THE STORY

Set the scene.

Visit Gozo explains Għajnsielem as a peaceful spring. The water source gave the harbour village its name.

Here’s the twist.

In 1700, Grand Master Perellos built an arcade around the spring with public washing basins and freshwater outlets. Water supported ordinary work as well as drinking.

Why it still matters.

Picture carrying laundry to a shared basin. A name that sounds poetic also recalls an everyday need: a place where people fetched water, worked and met one another.
